I wanted to share my top book recommendations to read. These are books to read that I believe would be great if you have a goal of reading more in the new year. This weekend I plan on taking some time to read more, and with reading more as one of my goals I feel right on track. These are some books I’ve read in the last year or so that I feel have helped me unwind after a hard week. Others are some Christian life books that have helped me in my walk with Christ.
Books To Unwind With
I loved this book so much! It’s filled with grand details, and I felt like I was slipping into DOON right along with our lead characters. Veronica and Mackenzie are two best friends that take a trip to the country side of Scotland. They stay at Mackenzie’s great aunt’s cottage. It’s at the cottage that the girls find two rings with a letter from Mackenzie’s aunt. The letter has odd instructions, and the girls decide to follow them. It’s in the midst of following the instructions that leads Veronica and Mackenzie to a place that seems to be more of a dream than reality. DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, and I gobbled it up! the scenery, love story, and descriptions were breathtaking. This book is also christian fiction and the romance is very clean.
The best part is DOON is part of Kindle Unlimited if you have the subscription, but if not it’s only 4.99 on Amazon Kindle !
This book is for my friends that love The Bachelor. The Beautiful Pretender made me think of what The Bachelor would have been like in older days. In this book we find The Margrave of Thornbeck in search for a wife, and invites 10 noble women from around the world to stay at his palace in hopes of one of them becoming his wife. He will put them through trials and tests to see which one of them should be his wife. He believes the women he choices should be soft spoken, obedient no matter what, and someone who the people would like but she wouldn’t have any opinions on the politics of the kingdom.
Our main character is NONE of these things and I love it. Avelina isn’t even noble. She’s actually the maidservant of Dorothea, and is sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to pretend to be his daughter. The cost is too deadly to not be successful at the deception. Avelina must pretend to be Dorothea, but not cause too much attention to come her way, but nothing ever goes as it’s suppose to.
This book is filled with angst, girl drama, true friendship, action, and love. This does have some faith elements to it, but it isn’t a huge drive in the book, however it is present and the character do speak of God by name.
If prayer if something that you are looking to grow in in 2019 these books are the place to start!
This book helped me learn how to pray for my marriage as well as how to NOT pray. I loved how this book took the time to break down things that we may pray during anger or out of resentment, without realizing the damage those prayers can do. This book is about pinpointing concrete prayers for you, your spouse, and ultimately your marriage.
A great thing this book had that many marriage prayer books seem to be lacking is a chapter on how to deal with a spouse that isn’t saved. This is so important and it’s sadly something that many christians struggle with. The chapter is motivating, wisdom filled, and has prayer examples if you don’t know where to start.
I read this over the summer and it has to be one of the best books on praying I’ve read. It also has a 30 day prayer devotional in the back that is perfect for the new year!
If I had to recommend you one book on this list it would be this one. The book talks about finding you passion for prayer, the strategies the enemy uses against you, and really opens your eyes to the battle we are in the midst of. This book had me so angry with the enemy and the ways I was allowing him in my life I was ready to truly put the Armor of God on and fight him the way God intended us to do, with prayer. Shirer’s writing is so motivating it’s like having a friend stand right in front of you and speak truth and life into you.

Growing In Your Walk With God

I read this book right after I rededicated my life to Christ, and it helped me so much. It helped me learn that being a christian isn’t having a Christina check list, but to live a life filled with excitement to live whole heartily for Him. This book showed me how to apply faithful living to every day living. This was a game changer for me, and I think it will be for you too!
I would love to hear what books you would recommend I read next. Let me know if you have or plan on reading any of these gems. I hope you get to cozy up with a nice cup of coffee and a good book today!
